Virtual Art in Modern Museums - HSE Design Day at Intermuseum 2014

On June 6, 2014 as part of the international festival ‘Intermuseum-2014’ the HSE Faculty of Design held a Design Day at Moscow Manege. Leading experts of the HSE Faculty of Design delivered seven lectures during the festival. They covered museum branding, infographics as part of modern exhibition design, interactive elements in museum exposition, iPad applications for museums, mobile architecture and many others.

Special guest of the festival, Arthur Clay delivered a lecture on virtual exhibitions in the modern city. Arthur Clay is an artist and curator, winner of digital art and science-art awards, who has participated in international festivals in Europe, America and Japan. He was born in New York and lives in Basel, Switzerland. Nowadays Arthur experiments with media art and large scale performances, based on mobile gadgets, using music and video and assembling acoustic and electronic media to create original works. He argues that today, when communication technologies  have become the main power of social and cultural changes, museums need to learn to ‘supervise the invisible’.

Clay is convinced that the success of any institution exhibiting art depends on its ability to establish communication with today’s  audience, the digital generation, who grew up in the virtual world. They  won’t be impressed, he says, by an exhibition of real objects. Genuine artifacts are no longer the main object of  exhibitions, but their digital counterparts, mixing virtual and real worlds, which give visitors a unique experience. Museums and other cultural institutions must develop the new opportunities offered by virtual space and demonstrate how technology contributes to its study. It’s about how new forms of interaction between reality and virtual reality  are able to expand the exposition of  museum rooms, flowing in the invisible that is beyond the museums’ walls.

The Intermuseum 2014 festival continues until June 9.
